Annular Eclipse - 2023

article and photos by Ben Lincoln

Some photos of the annular solar eclipse on October 14, 2023. The sky was very cloudy, but we were able to see most of the key part of the event through breaks in the clouds. As a side bonus, the clouds dimmed the sun so much that we were able to see and photograph the event without solar filtering.

The raw images were shot with a 600mm Sigma reflex (mirror) lens that I found at a garage sale years ago. I hand-aligned the images that turned out so that I could make a (short) time-lapse video.

Taking the photos also gave me the chance to capture an example of the odd ring-shaped bokeh that is caused by this type of folded optic mirror lens:

Telescope-style mirror lenses produce ring-shaped bokeh.
