Stencil Art by Raw Garbage

article and photos by Ben Lincoln, artwork by Raw Garbage

A long-time friend of mine started working with stencil painting a few years ago. You can see more of his art and read his large volume of writing at Deathwish Industries. Note: some of the content on his site may be considered offensive or "not safe for work" - there's nothing actually horrifying present, but if it were a film it would be rated "R".

Raw Garbage exhibited an elaborate television (with stand) at a recycled art show in Ballard in April of 2009. The television is fed by a DVD player fed through the RF Signal Degrader that I built specifically for this purpose. The quasi-fisheye images with the blurry edges were produced by stacking an unbranded "Night Vision Quartz" 0.24x converter on the end of a Nikon Series E 28mm lens.

This is a multispectral set I did that shows the inside of the television stand from the previous set of images. I'm not happy with the composition I did, but the variation in colours of the fluorescent paint across the spectrum is great.

The macro shots were taken with a 100mm Nikon Series E lens on an extension ring. This was the first time I used my WhiBal in the field, and I was amazed at the accurate colour reproduction it gave.

This may not be my greatest framing of all time, but on the other hand where else are you going to go that has a multispectral image set of an awesome skull-stenciled beer lightbox with a 2/3-full bottle of gin sitting on top? Nowhere, that's where!

The Machine was an old-timey fat-jiggling "exercise" machine... once. Now it is a fell engine of infernal design, a black juggernaut from the depths.

This is one of those long, narrow light fixtures that bars tend to have hanging over pool tables. Of course, it has been extensively stenciled by Raw Garbage. The second and third shots are some of my favourites of all time.

The base for this artwork was an old-style board-mounted electric motor. Its drive shaft would be connected to other tools as needed.
