GARBAGE MEN INVASION

article and photos by Ben Lincoln, artwork by Raw Garbage

In April 2012, my friend Raw Garbage had some pieces on display at Tasty. For the art walk opening day, he went a little further and set up five friends as "THE GARBAGE MEN". I followed them from Tasty to Urban Light Studios.

This was my first chance to try some real shooting using the Sony NEX-7 that I bought to replace my old Nikon D70. It hasn't been converted for UV/IR use as of this writing, so these are all "normal" photos. I didn't keep track of which shots were taken using which lenses, but the ones I used that night were:

Raw Garbage himself is notoriously hard to photograph, especially when he sends his team of GARBAGE MEN to a different gallery while staying behind at the first one.

Whitney has a band that you should check out. They have a timeless sound that makes me think of what rock music would have been like if the past were a lot better than it actually was. They also put on an outstanding live set - the last time I saw a drummer hammer away at their kit the way Whitney does was when I was at Nirvana's last show in the US.

World-famous film star Matt Damon made a surprise appearance during the event. He tried to keep a low profile, going so far as to protest that "*** **** **, Ben! I'm not Matt ******* Damon! My name is Liam Christopher! Liam Kingsley Christopher! We went to school together for at least seven years!"

Nice try, Mr. Damon, but I think I'd remember.

Meta-reaction shot!

As you can see, the the star of blockbusters such as The Bourne Identity and The Departed was delighted to be recognized.
The "meta-reaction shot" captures his overwhelming feelings of wonder and honour at being presented with a framed print of the 3x3 photo array the following day. You can see that he's already begun to alter his appearance to look more like John Barrowman in preparation for an upcoming role as Scott Baio's character in a grim reboot of Zapped!.

Fans of extremely obscure films may remember Al as "Action Man" in RCW Productions' The Electronic Playground from the early 1990s.
