The Colours of Autumn

This is a set of photos I took on top of Queen Anne Hill in Seattle near the end of October in 2009. Specifically, they're from the block of 2nd Avenue West between West Galer and West Garfield.

Like most field photography of plants, there were certainly some issues with registration due to the leaves blowing around in the wind. I've eliminated most of these problems, but left in a few where I thought the rest of the image outweighed them.

The wind was blowing this tree branch around too much for the near infrared shot to line up with the others for most of the false colour variations (which I've therefore omitted). This is a bit ironic, because I spent quite awhile attempting to get an the ultraviolet exposure that matched up and thought I'd failed, whereas I was sure I'd nailed the near infrared.

The manual focus Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens provided a hot-spot free near infrared image for this shot, but did not give good results in the ultraviolet region. Fortunately I was able to pull enough detail out of it in post-processing to create some nice false colour images of this large tree.
